The BRC TopSpec Dressage to Music Championships 2021 took place last weekend, Friday 1 to Sunday 3 October at Bury Farm Equestrian Village in Buckinghamshire.
We were delighted to have TopSpec back as our title sponsor for the fifth year running, and we were very fortunate to have Jess Burbage, TopSpec Regional Manager on hand all weekend to give out rosettes, sashes and prizes and also with the TopSpec weighbridge. Jess weighed many horse and ponies, providing helpful feeding advice for competitors.
Katy Mickle, TopSpec Managing Director said: “We were delighted to support the BRC TopSpec Dressage to Music Championships once again, there was some fantastic competition over the weekend and some really close results. Congratulations to all the awards winners it really was a wonderful Championships.”
These championships included ten dressage classes for both senior and junior members, with over 150 pre-qualified riders from across the UK taking part in a range of classes from Prelim to Advanced Medium level. The weekend started with the Medium / Advanced Medium Pick A Test class on Friday morning, which was an open class for junior and senior riders. The judges were treated to some really, fabulous freestyle dressage tests, with highly imaginative and intricate music and floorplans. Bond music proved a very popular choice over the weekend, must have something to do with the launch of the new Bond film!
“I wanted to thank you for inviting me to judge at Bury Farm, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The pairs brought back so many memories of when I was a member of the riding clubs, many, many years ago and there are some truly talented kids!” – Sarah Jacklin, BD List 4 Dressage to Music Judge
Friday 1 October
The BRC TopSpec Pick A Test Medium Dressage to Music Championship and Overall Individual Pick A Test Winner was Kate Heap riding San Francisco PR from Billericay & District RC, Area 8, Essex with a score of 72%, Sandie Gibbs riding Gomez Gold from Saffron Walden & District RC finished second on 70.5%
“San Francisco and I have competed at the BRC Championships at Bury Farm before, as part of a quadrille with Billericay & District RC, but never as an individual before, and this year was especially special for me as my eldest daughter Robyn Heap had also made the Junior Prelim Dressage to Music final, this was a first for us having myself and my 10 year old daughter in the same final” Kate Heap
The BRC TopSpec Pick A Test Advanced Medium Dressage to Music Championship went to junior rider Morgan Kent riding Kolsteins Don Amigo from Wessex Gold RC, Area 9, Goucs, with a score of 71%. Morgan has had an extremely successful year with his pony, winning at a number of Championships.
The BRC TopSpec Elementary Dressage to Music Championship was won by Lauren Shelley riding Cardinar Surprise from CROWN RC, Area 5, West Midlands, with a score of 73.27%, with Susan Grimes riding For Vehlage, Northern DG on 71.92%. Chloe Mason from Tendring Hundred RC was the highest placed junior rider, finishing in third place on Glowon Dewi.
“We’d never done Dressage to Music before this year, but in lockdown last year I decided to set myself a challenge and give it a go. We put the floorplan together and chose the music in April, I must have listened to hundreds of different music choices to find something that really suited Surprise (and something I would enjoy listening to over and over again!). The final music choices were ‘epic’ music which is orchestral film style music. Our music was taken from these tracks; Journey to Aurora (trot), Reach (Walk) and Phoenix Rising (Canter).” Lauren Shelley
The BRC TopSpec Open Pairs Dressage to Music Championship was won by Northern Dressage Group, Area 3 pair Dawn Grundy riding Rough Lee So Schufro and Sue Grimes riding Otto, who stepped in at the last minute, scoring of 68.10%.
Saturday 2 October
The BRC TopSpec Senior Novice with Points Dressage to Music Championship was won by Vicky Allen riding Eau Noire from Horsham & District RC, Area 13, West Sussex with a score of 73.33%, with Bizzy Loffet riding Dario FO in second place on 71.39%.
The BRC TopSpec Junior Prelim Dressage to Music Championship was won for a second year by Bethy Naylor-Davis riding MS Houdini (Salsa) from Wey Valley RC, Area 11, Surrey with a score of 74.31%. Grace Smith riding Mocachinno from Malton & District RC was second on 70.97%. Bethy was presented with a fabulous bridle by The Honourable Mark Maffey, Prime Warden from The Worshipful Company of Saddlers.
Bethy says “It was very special to win this year as last year there was no prize giving due to Covid, Salsa loved all the attention and especially enjoyed the lap of honour. Every time she does DTM she comes alive and absolutely loves dancing to the music. This year she went really well and the music fitted superbly, although I was a bit worried I would run out of room to halt at the end! It was extra special to win a grackle bridle as Salsa recently broke hers on the stable door at the Lincoln Championships and had to borrow the Shetland bridle on this occasion!”
The BRC TopSpec Junior Novice Dressage to Music Championship was won by Chloe Mason riding Glowon Dewi (Freddie) representing Tendring Hundred RC, Area 8, with the highest score of the weekend 75%, Violet Hawkins riding Glenlichd Fair Un Square from Aspley Guise RC was second on 73.06%.
“This was my third year competing at the BRC Dressage to Music Championships but my last as a junior rider. I was really thrilled with how my test went, Freddie was super cool and danced his little socks off to our test which my mum devised along with the music. I love my music as it suits Freddie’s cheeky personality and is quite different from most other rider’s music.
We were also third in the Elementary which I was totally surprised by, as we had a few little moments of tension and we were in a very busy class full of seniors. We definitely had a lovely time and BRC staff are so helpful and friendly.” Chloe Mason
The BRC TopSpec Novice Pairs Dressage to Music Championship was won by Helen Williams riding Secretley Unique and Caroline Tough riding Whinchat from South Durham RC, Area 2, North East, with a score of 72.86%.
“We absolutely loved riding the Novice Pairs to Music on Saturday. It is my favourite competition and especially after winning the Pairs DTM Championship twice before with a previous horse Trevoulter Silver Replica. I was keen to compete in this again. We use the same Country and Western music as this seems to get us good results.” Caroline Tough
Sunday 3 October
The BRC TopSpec Senior Novice 0 Points Dressage to Music Championship was won by Joanne Pitman riding Allenbrook Babieca from Equestrian Training RC, Area 12, South West with a score of 70.69%, with Jill Bransby riding riding Hardi Van Het Vijuerhof from Solihull RC, Area 5, West Mids in second on 70.56%.

“I was really pleased with how our test went, regardless of the result. Hardi was a real star, as he can be rather spooky at times. He didn’t put a foot wrong and we are pleased everyone seemed to enjoy it. I thought the quality of the opposition was excellent, so I was ‘surprised’ at winning.” Jill Bransby
Also, back for 2021 Horse & Country TV were on site live streaming all of the various championship classes over the three days, giving BRC members the opportunity to watch the event live and on catch-up from the comfort of their homes.
Special thank you must also go to the wonderful group of BRC volunteers who helped to make this such a special event for all the riders taking part this year.
