BORN TO RIDE

International Event Rider Hayden Hankey started to ride not long after he could walk! Being born into a horse obsessed, focused and committed family it was the obvious choice he was going to make for his future.

Hayden’s late mother, Jane Beswick, was the renowned producer of the ‘Pebbly’ show pony line, and his formative years were spent producing and riding ‘Pebbly’ show ponies, amassing consisitent wins nationally and regularly qualifying for and winning at Horse of the Year Show and Royal International. It wasn’t an unusual sight to see Hayden riding the Champion pony whilst leading the Reserve Champion!

1997 saw him riding as amateur jockey for National Hunt jockey and trainer David Nicholson. He stayed with David for 3 years before going on to be working pupil/rider for William Fox-Pitt, John Whittaker and Tuffy Tilley.

Since 2003 Hayden has concentrated on buying, producing, competing and selling show jumping and event horses, including Alex Hua Tians famous Olympic horse ‘Don Jonero’.
‘Pebbly Whitestuff’ came along in early 2003 and successfully went from Novice to win Advanced at Auchinlek, and completed Bramham and Blenheim 3* the following year.

‘You’ve Got The Lux’ or Perfect Poppy as she is known at home was bought in 2016, a little mare with a huge attitude who Hayden has brought up the ranks culminating in being chosen to represent Great Britain at the Young Event Horse Championships at Le Lion d’Angers in France in 2017 where he finished in a very creditable 10th place.

Hayden is based at the family farm just outside Knutsford in Cheshire, where most of the training is done on the 60 x 40 all weather arena and grass dressage arena. Close by is Somerford Park, very handy for the excellent cross country training field. He has an exciting string of young and more experienced horses fit and raring to go for the 2018 season. It has been a great start so far for Team Hankey, the horses are exceeding all expectations and we have high hopes for the rest of the year.

Two lucky Equitrader readers will win a lesson* with Hayden Hankey!

*(NB: The lesson will be on the winner’s own horse and will take place at Hayden’s yard in Cheshire, on a date to be arranged with Hayden. Alternatively Hayden is happy to travel within a 20 mile radius of Knutsford. The winner will be responsible for their own transport, hire of external facilities and accommodation arrangements if required.)

To be in with a chance of winning simply answer the following question:

What is the name of the horse Hayden rode when representing Britain at the Young Event Horse Championships at Le Lion d’Angers in France in 2017?
