Here we find out more about the legendary sport horse stallion, Ramiro B owned by Nina Barbour of the Harthill Stud, but this year standing at Stallions AI.
Meet the Legendary Ramiro B – World No 4 Event Sire
At 24-years-old Ramiro B is simply one of the undisputed kings of sport horse stallions around the globe.
Showing precocious talent as a show jumper as a young horse, Irishman Edward Doyle produced him up to Grand Prix level before his successful breeding career finally took over full time.
A Belgian Warmblood by Calvani, a son of Caretino, one of Germany’s top sires of all times, Ramiro B is the sire of Nations Cup Level Show Jumpers and 4* Eventers.
Being 40% thoroughbred he adds quality movement and jump and without fail passes on his willing and winning mentality, making him a very commercial choice for every level of breeder.
Ramiro B was bred by Belgian breeder Ludo Janssens in 1994. Ludo sold him at an auction at three-years-old to Barnadown Stud’s Maurice Cousins in the winter of 1997/98 at auction and this is when he got his first taste of Ireland.
After Maurice backed him, one of Ramiro’s first notable successes was when he claimed the prestigious Dundrum, four-year-old championships at Kerrygold Horse Show in 1998.
Maurice was in the business of buying and selling horses, so that’s what had to happen. Under new ownership of the late Michael Earls, the talented Irish showjumper Edward Doyle was given the opportunity to partner with Ramiro in competition.
Together the duo recorded a number of Grand Prix wins, including the 2002 North Wexford Grand Prix. They also bagged a number of high-profile placings both in Ireland and internationally. Edward cannot fault the talented stallion and expressed how Ramiro mixed his competing with covering mares which didn’t bother him; he could cover the day before a competition and still be very easy to ride.
Owner of Harthill Stud and organiser of Bolesworth International Horse Show and Liverpool International Horse Show, Nina Barbour approached the McArdle’s at the Goresbridge Go For Gold sale in the autumn of 2011, which led him to his next chapter at Harthill Stud.
Nina explained that just one of his many attributes is his great temperament, which he consistently passes on to his youngstock. One of the qualities that makes Ramiro B really stand out from other stallions is that foals tend to take on his characteristics instead of the dam’s, meaning he can improve on the traits of any mare.
Currently standing at Stallion AI services although Harthill will always be his real home, Ramiro B doesn’t struggle to cope with global demands despite his age. His semen is tested on a regular basis to make sure the AI straws contain the highest quality product.
Demand for fresh, chilled and frozen Ramiro B semen is on the up. Ramiro B produces commercial offspring which can be marketed to anyone, whether you are a professional looking for a serious horse or an amateur wanting to enjoy yourself and win.
A prolific sire in both the sport of eventing and show jumping he is in popular demand with a fantastic conception rate.
Examples of his offspring include the show jumpers Ramiro Cruise now competing at CSI5* with Albert Zorzi; Samgemjee who competed up to 1.60m level with Edward Doyle and Juan Pablo Gnecco and Heracross a partner for Nick Skelton, Lauren Hough and Paris Sello at 1.60m level.
On the eventing scene progeny include Cooley Masterclass – a winner at CIC*** level at Burnham Market and three further top 3 finishes in international CIC*** classes last year; consistent CCI4* campaigner Noble Bestman, Cooley SRS a European Championships Team Gold Winner and also claiming three top 3 finishes in international CIC*** classes in 2017; and Ballynoe Castle RM a horse wining the most FEI points ever won in North America.
Current stars also include consistent up and coming advanced horses Cooley Again and Cooley Earl, who represent a whole host of future stars in the sports of show jumping and eventing.
In the winter, Ramiro enjoys downtime at Bolesworth, but now enjoys the stud season in the capable hands of Tullis Matson and his team at Stallion AI services. Regular analysis of his semen together with expert management have both ensured that Ramiro’s conception rates have stayed consistently high, making him the ultimate commercial choice for any breeder.
Ramiro B has a stud fee of £950 plus VAT offering fresh, chilled or frozen semen.
